Goats! Keeping a Small Herd
Wednesday 9/18/13   6 - 7:30pm
  Furry, hoofed nuzzling companions right outside your home. Yesss!  Learn about different breeds, companionship, hiking, milking and fiber options. We'll talk about space, creative housing, feeders, nutrition, garden and foraged plants, hoof care and behaviors. Whether you have a small space or a lot of land, own goats already or a dreaming of it, come learn a lot of fun goat info. Cover Crops: Grow Your Own Fertlity
Friday 9/20/13   6 - 7pm
  Loosen clay soils and build fertility by growing cover crops over winter and other times of year. Fruity Flowering Hedgerows

  Create a delicious and beautiful "fence" of plants around or mixed into your garden, whether you rent or own. We'll cover pineapple guava, kiwis, grapes, dwarf mulberries, goumis, figs, honeyberries, currants, blueberries, grapes, olives, black and raspberries, tea plants, columnar apples, gojis, plums. Vampires 101: Growing Good Garlic

  Never fear. No vampires will come near. Your garlic cloves will grow into big, strong, healthy bulbs with all organic growing methods. Learn about the many different delicious varieties, times to plant, prepping and rotating beds, fertility, harvesting, curing and storage. Goat Hedgerows: Gardening and Foraging for Your Herd
Early Spring of 2014
  Growing food for your goats as a living "fence" and planted throughout your garden.  Goats are browsers who are healthiest with a diverse array of plants supplementing their hay.  We'll cover many herbs, veggies, shrubs and trees. Learn which ones you'll both find yummy and share, how and when to plant, harvesting and drying techniques, storage, plus browse, herb and treat feeders. We'll also cover foraging - finding crops that are a nuisance or surplus for others, to bring back to your herd. Includes training your friends, neighbors and other extended herd humans... on what is edible versus toxic and what to find and save for your goats. Any gardeners who own goats, dream of it or are intrigued to learn so that they may be magical goat elves bearing goodies... are encouraged to attend. Friday, June 14th at 6pm - Free slideshow of 35 really neat farms tucked into cities across the west coast, including 8 of them here in Portland, with author Lori Eanes of Backyard Roots, Lessons on Living Local from 35 Urban Farms. Some of the local farmers will be here for you to meet and talk with, too.  Yay!!

Sunday, June 16th from 2 - 3pm - Free Meet and Greet with Seattle author Bill Thorness.  He will be here to talk about year round organic gardening in our excellent maritime climate with his book, Cool Season Gardener.  A percentage of sales from his new book will benefit Oregon Tilth, whose Organic garden educator Colleen Lockovitch will also be on hand to talk with you. Come by with your questions!

Whether you rent or own, learn how to create fabulously delicious and bee-utiful hedgerows, along with ideas to incorporate perennial fruits, flowers, herbs and perennial vegetables into other areas around your home.  We will give you ideas and inspiration for planting everything from a hedgerow of kiwi vines or a patch of pawpaw trees, to a diversely planted array.  And we've both rented and moved many plants around, so we're happy to provide ideas on perennials that can travel with you or grow on in pots while you plan and evaluate your planting areas.
